This past Saturday, Jan. 29, Campus Activities Council (CAC) and Rec. Sports hosted a Mario Kart and Smash Bros tournament for everyone at EMU to enjoy. The event began at 8:00 P.M. in the Suter Science Center (SSC), where people were able to participate in the tournament or simply watch their friends and acquaintances play while enjoying some tasty food.
The players had the opportunity to choose whichever character they liked featured in the Mario Kart race, but the all time favorites seemed to be Luigi, Yoshi (Black Yoshi), Princess Peach, and Shy Guy.
The event started right on time, and it was a good opportunity for everyone to hang out, have some fun, play, and even eat some food. Holding the tournament in room 106 of SSC allowed a lot of people to play and participate, but it also allowed for others to simply enjoy watching other people play while eating some snacks. Senior Tahj’ae Coleman says, “I enjoy watching other people play as much as playing myself. I think that it creates the same feeling of excitement, to root for a specific character in the game and see the results.”
The event also allowed for people to move to a more low-key room where they could still play without necessarily being observed by a group of people. Participants could move to room 13 in SSC where people used the Wii game system to play with their friends or with anyone who was willing to play. Both rooms were occupied by EMU students excited to have some fun on a Saturday night.
CAC and Rec Sports provided delicious food like cheese and beef taquitos, burritos, assorted cookies, and even something to drink while having fun. They also provided a microwave that people could use to warm up their food if they wanted to.
Junior Joy Parakuo says, “I’m glad that EMU is still trying to do activities that can connect us all together despiste the pandemic and while taking every possible precaution.”
The event ran smoothly as people started to show up. Junior Amanda Gilbert says, “I was excited to go and watch other people play and I loved the vibes of the whole event. I got to relax, have fun, and enjoy the night.”
The tournament was an exciting event that allowed EMU students to enjoy their Saturday night with friends and connect with others.
