Hiking Kilimanjaro was one of the toughest, most mentally challenging things I have ever done. It is an experience I will hold with me for a long time, not just because of the amazing views, beautiful creatures, and kind people, but because of the purpose. I do not know that I would have made it to the top without having a reason and I can honestly say that MJ Sharp got me to the peak. I am blessed and privileged to have been able to take this journey and am honored that I could document it.

Senior Riley Swartzendruber participated in the MJ Sharp Dream Hike, taken to the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro from Mar. 4-15, 2019. The group of students, alumni, and others traveled to the summit to spread Sharp’s ashes while raising awareness and funds for the Michael J. Sharp Peace and Justice Endowed Scholarship for the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at EMU. Included here are a selection of Swartzendruber’s photos from the hike.
