EMU recently welcomed a new Director of Counseling Services, Allison Collazo. Collazo was the counseling director at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. for three years. She got both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from EMU, and volunteered at the counselling center while she was here.
Collazo has dived right into her new role, providing insight for the EMU community in the time of COVID-19. “Social distancing and being required to stay in one place really forces anyone, really, to think about what it’s like to be in your own space,” she said. “What that means for a lot of people that can be quite scary, especially for people that used to seek solace elsewhere, whether that’s a friend or going to classes, and seeing people and having routine.”
Collazo encourages those who may need it to seek out counseling in their own time. “It is completely up to the person, and for talking about the student population—if they feel like they are in a position where they might benefit from these services then it’s perfect to seek that service out.”
The counseling center now offers counseling sessions over Zoom. To set up an appointment, email them at counselingservices@emu.edu.
