EMU’s art club is working together with the science department to create a mural on a blank concrete wall that resides in Parkwoods. This mural that they are creating is significant because it will promote more engagement and awareness of the current Parkwoods space, encouraging students and community members to explore the beauty of the area that is somewhat hidden from EMU’s campus. While parkwoods is already at a place that is kind of distant on the EMU campus, this will bring people together and make aware that parkwoods is a space that is also shared on the EMU campus with students living in the apartments.

Art club’s executive member senior Rachel Tusing gives a little insight on this mural project. Tusing shares that the Arts club was motivated to design a mural for this space because they saw how desolate the area looked and needed something that would bring more people towards parkwoods. The wall that they are planning to work on is currently plain concrete that has already been graffitied over the years. Tusing shares “We believe that a mural will add a unique, playful element to the area and exemplify the natural beauty in the surrounding woods”. How are they exactly going to create this mural you ask? Tusing explains “We are looking to create a collaborative mural that all of campus can participate in. We are currently accepting design proposals from EMU students (submissions will be open until December 1st), and we hope to collaborate with multiple designers to create a final “composite” design that combines our visions. In the Spring semester, Arts Club and designers will outline the mural on the wall. Then, we will invite students to participate in painting the mural with us! We are hoping to have a “grand reveal” late in the Spring semester to celebrate”. That’s right! YOU can be a part of this grand project of designing a mural that will be memorable on EMU’s campus and will be something you leave behind at EMU. Tusing gives us some final words “Ultimately, this is a community building project. We encourage any student who is passionate about art, nature, or looking to build community on campus to get involved! If you have any questions or would like more information, please reach out to Arts Club Executives!”.
