In these challenging times when people have no option but to stay home even during the weekends, EMU had the opportunity to host events that everyone in the community could enjoy from the safety of their homes. This past Saturday, March 20, EMU presented their very own musical event featuring David Berry. The event began at 7:00 p.m., and it was available via Zoom and Facebook Live. More than 100 viewers tuned in to listen to Berry play the piano.
The event lasted 45 minutes, and the program included Franz Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor and an Original Arrangement of an African American Spiritual.
The event went smoothly without any issues. People started to tune in minutes before the event even started. Shortly after the virtual event ended it became available for people to view in case they missed it live or wanted to go back to enjoy it one more time.
Sonata in B Minor is a very distinctive and unique piece that lasts about 30 minutes, and there are very unique moments within the piece. Berry was able to perform it in a way that felt impactful, even for people who are not familiar with the piece or who do not have a background in music.
Berry has always been able to project emotions into his playing, and he does it in a way that makes it look easy and effortless. This projection of emotions aids in providing the spectators with a unique performance that is unforgettable.
Since the event became available on Facebook, many people have commented and expressed their reactions to the event, calling it a wonderful performance and showing their gratitude to EMU for hosting the event and to David Berry for performing.
Third-year Tahj’ae Coleman said, “[Berry’s] performance was perfect, and I am glad that I was able to see it. He is clearly talented.”
First-year Enna Lainez said, “Even though I don’t know much about music, Berry’s performance was very enjoyable.”
This event is just one of the numerous events created by the music department. On March 25 there will be another performance by Noa Kageyama, who is a performance psychologist. Also, during the upcoming months there will be more events that the whole community will be able to enjoy.
