“I was sitting in the caf one night with a group of friends, and we were discussing different dishes we liked to make at the self-cook station,” junior Hannah Beck recounted, as she shared about how her recent project, Easy Caf Recipes that are really frickin good, came to be.

Hannah Beck, a junior psychology major, recently sent a link to the Campus Activity Council’s campus-wide Groupme chat Royal Radar inviting students to look at and edit a public document. This document consists of a table and instructions on top regarding how to use the table. The instructions are clear and direct: “Enter your favorite recipes/combinations that you’ve made in the caf.”

EMU’s cafeteria (caf) offers a variety of dishes for breakfast, lunch, and supper. However, in addition to these dishes, the caf has a self-cook station for anyone who wants to make a meal of their own with ingredients offered at the station. Many students utilize the self-cook station and now, thanks to Hannah Beck’s recipe document, it is safe to expect an increase in the use of the station.

Easy Caf Recipes that are really frickin good currently has 4 recipes and counting. Contributors so far have all given their recipe a name, an ingredient list, an estimate of the time it takes to make the recipe, and instructions as well as notes on how to make the dish. This document can be very helpful to anyone who wants to make a meal outside of the dishes made by the caf, but especially to those who may want to cook something but don’t know where to start.

Another cool thing about this project is that the recipes are not limited to the ingredients offered at the self-cook station. Most of the recipes on the document feature ingredients from different stations such as tortillas, fruit, and granola which are found at other areas in the caf. This shows how creative one can get with the food that the caf provides and that the possibilities are endless.

Hannah Beck says that the goal for this project is “to provide a place for students to share their favorite recipes from the caf and to help us better utilize the different food options we have access to for more diverse dish options.”

Diverse dish options are important when considering the fact that many students across EMU have dietary restrictions or choices that may limit the variety in what they can eat at the caf. A project like this provides those students with options that they may have not considered before.Easy Caf Recipes that are really frickin good is a public Google document that is open to anyone who eats at the caf or has recipe ideas that can be made with the ingredients at the caf. The document currently contains recipes for Stir Fry, Applesauce Crisp, Breakfast Burritos and more.
