Last month, EMU launched their partnership with Talkspace to provide students with more services for mental health support. According to EMU counseling services, “Talkspace is an online therapy service that connects users to a dedicated, licensed therapist in their state of residence.” Students can be in contact with their therapist through text, voice, or live video. The service hopes to “eliminate the stigma associated with mental health and make therapy available to all.”

First-year Abigail Hickok, who recently signed up for the service, says, “If you’re hesitant towards in person therapy or counseling, I think this is a great alternative to traditional therapy.”

She describes Talkspace as being “super easy to use.” Using the link on EMU’s counseling services page, you’ll be taken to the Talkspace website. From there, you’ll be able to enter your personal information to get your account set up. If you’re worried about sharing personal details, Talkspace follows HIPAA, state, and federal laws to ensure that your privacy is protected.

Some find the most difficult part of the sign up process to be knowing what to enter for “Organization name.” You can find what to input on EMU’s counseling services “Talkspace” page, under “EMU’s Talkspace Access Info.”

After filling out the basics, you’re asked more personal questions, which Hickok found desirable about the service. You’re given a long list of therapists to choose from based on your preferences. If you prefer female therapists, you have the option to pick one. Each therapist also has reviews from previous clients and their areas of expertise listed alongside them. There are therapists who specialize in specific disorders, such as anxiety or depression, and there are also therapists who specialize in helping people, such as POC and LGBTQ+ clients. It’s very personalized for your needs and background.

You’re also given the availability of each therapist. Since most communication on Talkspace is asynchronous, knowing this information is important. Whether you plan to use the service casually or frequently, there’s a therapist who best fits your schedule.

EMU offering this service to students allows us to fit taking care of our mental health into our busy lives. Talkspace is also great for students who are quarantining because of COVID-19. Quarantine can be a lonely and mentally draining time. Having access to mental health sources during it is crucial. Even if you don’t plan on using Talkspace right away, signing up for an account can allow you to have quick access to a therapist whenever you find yourself needing one.
