Members of Voxti, EMU’s student-led acapella octet, and The Gospel Project, a two man show “showcasing stories from the four gospels” involving EMU theater director Justin Poole and recent alumni Perry Blosser, embarked on a brief tour over fall break. The troupe performed a double act show at Blooming Glen Mennonite Church in Bucks County, Pennsylvania on the evening of Friday the 21. Saturday was spent wandering around New York City before seeing the Broadway musical “Hadestown” in the afternoon. They then returned to Blooming Glen Sunday morning, where Voxti led and performed during the worship service.
Voxti and The Gospel Project also performed a few shows at EMU and Eastern Mennonite High School throughout the fall.
Voxti member and sophomore Reah Clymer said of the trip, “It was a fun opportunity to perform out of state. We also got to spend a day in New York and have so much fun together.”
The time in New York was a highlight for many people involved. Adam Hoover, a sophomore who also is a member of Voxti spoke positively about the trip saying, “Getting to see a Broadway production for the first time was very interesting and an amazing experience overall. Both the story, actors and the voices that you heard, and also seeing technologically how advanced the stage is is amazing!”
Clymer’s favorite part was definitely watching the “really cool musical on Broadway.”
Emma Nord, who helped introduce the show during the tour, remarked, “New York was amazing! It was several of our first times [there] and nothing can beat the magic of Broadway. I was not prepared for an existential crisis [caused by the overwhelming experience of everything in New York] but it really fed into the theatrical experience.”
Nord also called the trip as a whole “a real treat”, saying, “to share our production of the Gospel Project and Voxti’s feature to the Blooming Glen community and to worship with them Sunday morning was really special.”
Hoover found a different aspect really special. “Joe Seitz’s calves are the most impressive muscle on anyone’s body in my life. A highlight of the trip!” Overall, the trip certainly was a meaningful bonding experience for all involved.
