“Do you feel safe at Eastern Mennonite University?” “Have you ever been sexually assaulted, stalked, raped, etc.?” “Did this event occur on campus or off?” “Were you under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol?”

Let’s celebrate sexual assault with “Take Back the Night” week! Let’s all come together to point out this incredibly triggering topic without giving help.

EMU does not actually care whether or not you have been sexually assaulted. All they care about is gaining statistics to claim that we are safe and good Christians.

These horrors only exist at James Madison University. It’s all your fault if you are on drugs. You’re a slut, and no one cares.

I was stalked during my freshman year at EMU, and after going to seek help from the Resident Director of my dorm building and then talking to the Title IX Coordinator, all I received was the constant questioning of my character. “Are you sure that you did not want this?”

Uh, no, thank you very much. I have a wonderful relationship, and my boyfriend does not force me to kiss him by pinning me against the floor. And no, I was not raped, but how much does knowing that really matter?

If I do not want to be touched inappropriately, then no one should be forcing themselves on me to the point of tears. It’s really that simple. Did I say, “yes?” If not, then get off of me. Thanks.

So I get up the nerve to talk to people, but like anyone who has been sexually assaulted knows, it’s hard to talk about stuff like that.

The vagueness just gave me more questions about my own character because it’s my own fault when another guy decides to take something that does not belong to him.

Instead of helping, the questions I received while seeking said help made me feel worse about myself.

No survivor of sexual assault should have to feel like that. This problem needs to be addressed. You’re welcome.
