Politics in the United States have been getting dirtier and dirtier. In previous weeks, I have attacked the Republicans a lot, so it is about time that I start critiquing the Democrats. Recently, a Democratic senator made it relatively easy to look into the Democrats. Senator Bob Menendez, D-N.J., got charged with corruption-related crimes for the second time in ten years on Friday, September 22nd. Menendez was known to be corrupt; if you asked any political nerd, they would have told you that he was corrupt even before the most recent charges against him. He was a decently liberal senator and fought for progressive causes, but again, he was notoriously corrupt. People might wonder how Menendez has been elected repeatedly even though. The answer to that is that he has always been corrupt, has friends in powerful places to help with his re-election, and is very Charismatic so can seem less corrupt. What Menendez got caught with may have fit better with a cartoon villain. He was not trying to hide it now; he was just selling gold bars out of nowhere. Needless to say, it’s always a little suspicious if a senator just out of nowhere starts selling gold bars worth about $400,000 each. Menendez also had envelopes of money around his house and copious amounts of cash in his home. The charges are that he was taking cash as bribes to vote a certain way on certain things and , in general, use his influence to help people who were bribing him. Additionally, Menendez’s wife, Nadine Menendez, was in on the whole thing, and she was the one who was selling the gold bars. Menendez has claimed that he has all of this cash because he grew up in Cuba and does not trust banks, so he keeps so much cash in his house. But it does not seem like he has kept this money in his house until recently. Senator Menendez is up for re-election in 2024 and has said that even though he is being indicted, he will still run for re-election. Since he has done this, most of the Democratic party has denounced him and called for him to resign. Two of the most notable people to do so are Senator Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Governor Phill Murphy, D-N.J., and representative Andy Kim, D-N.J., who has already announced that he will primary Senator Menendez. Senator Menendez should resign immediately; he has shown that he is corrupt, and he has shown us that he believes he is above the law. So, if I am going to say that I think that Trump should not hold public office because he broke the law, I need also to say that Senator Menendez should not be holding public office.
