During this time of year, millions of people around the world are excited to put up the Christmas tree and decorate it with their family, build gingerbread houses, sing Christmas songs, watch Christmas movies, and overall enjoy the holiday session. But what many forget to realize is that for others, the holidays can be the most dreadful time of the year, where the dark sky feels as dark as the feeling inside一that feeling when waking up and getting out of bed feels harder to do each day, and just leaving house is a chore—and they are faking a smile to blend in with the people who actually enjoy this time of the year.

This is called seasonal depression, and it is very real. Many people struggle with it every year around this time, which is why it is important to keep in mind that while you are getting excited about the holiday season, you should also check in on the ones around you who may be struggling during this time. Many people may have lost loved ones, experienced trauma, or may just struggle with depression regularly during this time. For them, when this time of year comes around, it feels like an alarm that won’t stop ringing rather than a joyful time of year.

I am not telling you to dim your joy because of others, but small acts of kindness can go a long way in helping them during this time of year, regardless of if they are expressing their pain or not. Reach out and talk to that person, spend time with them, or just tell them how much you love and appreciate them.

Also keep in mind that depression is very serious, and if you believe a loved one or close friend may be showing signs of self-harm or suicidal thoughts or tendencies, please get them help as soon as possible, because waiting around for them to “magically get better” can be a very dangerous game to play. There are numerous helping professionals or phone numbers available by trained professionals who are always on standby to help with these kinds of things, so never hesitate to get help for yourself or someone you love.

With all that being said, remember that the holidays are supposed to be about surrounding yourself with friends and family, to spread love to one another, so make it a priority to always extend that love to the ones who may need it most this year.
