Whether you are an avid reader or television viewer, or you only pick up a book or watch a TV show to look at its pretty colors or upbeat soundtracks, you are generally aware of what makes a story extraordinary and what makes a story flat-out dull. Some aspects of a great show or book include hooks, cliffhangers, plot twists, and character arcs. Now apply this to reality TV shows. Who wants to watch a show that centers around boring people with ordinary lives? I introduce to you Vanderpump Rules, a show that is anything but boring.
Vanderpump Rules will take you on the adventure of a lifetime. You don’t have to like reality television to be engorged in this show. Vanderpump Rules centers around the Sur Restaurant in West Hollywood. Our main characters are the servers and their exotic lives both inside of work, and the drama that follows them home. With scandalous hookups and not-so-romantic getaways, Vanderpump Rules is sure to keep you entertained. The show starts inside an average restaurant, with average staff, and an average owner. However it becomes anything but average, just get through the first episode and you’ll see what I mean.
If my introduction to this glorious show is not enough to persuade you into watching it, which you can access with a subscription to Peacock, a premium subscription to Hulu, and many other streaming platforms, allow me to provide you with some statistics as to why reality television is better than scripted or animated TV. According to Psychology Today, reality television is good for society as it allows viewers to reflect on a personal similar situation and how they may handle it. Reality TV helps viewers share empathy for those who are experiencing similar situations to theirs. But reality television is beneficial for more than just inner reflection. According to an article by Columbia Magazine, reality TV reveals how much society has grown and how parts of society have stayed the same. Reality TV has statistically shown more diversity and representation throughout history. You can think of reality television as a time capsule, you can see the reality of the past while reflecting on the present as you sit on your couch wearing your finest pajamas.
So while you may not be the biggest fan of reality television, I think you should give Vanderpump Rules a try. Dive deep into Stassi Schroeder’s relationships, adventure with Scheana Shay through her musical career, and so much more. You never know, you may be able to find comfort in the craziness or find yourself within one of the characters. Once you dip your toes into the reality TV pool, you never go back.
