Despite the added stress, extra workload, and long production nights, being this Spring semester’s Weather Vane Co-Editor has been an incredibly rewarding experience thanks to the amazing staff I’ve gotten the privilege to work alongside.
This Spring marks my third semester working for the Weather Vane. Each semester has been unique in its own way, due in large part to the come and go of staff members. With others having their own commitments and senior members graduating, I’ve been able to work with many faces, both familiar and new.
This year, many of the members I first met in the Fall continued working into the Spring. Given all the time spent with this group, I’ve grown to appreciate Weather Vane for more than just being an archive of life at EMU. The small community that is the Weather Vane staff has brought so much fun to my hectic life.
There was never a Wednesday when the Maplewood basement wasn’t full of laughter. Immature jokes and playful teasing were abundant within the group, these moments proof of our closeness and the enjoyment we felt being all together. Although we occasionally got off track from planning, we always managed to pull ourselves together by the end, finding important campus stories and perspectives to cover in our paper – many of which are featured in the issue you’re reading right now!
Even after a last minute change in my schedule resulted in me holding the Co-Editor position during an incredibly busy semester, attending these Wednesday planning meetings and productions were times I looked forward to every week because I knew they meant more time spent with the group.
I’ve made tons of memories with the current staff. Religiously enjoying the same three Domino’s pizza flavors, trying desperately to come up with fitting article titles every production night, and being subject to ridiculous George W. Bush quotes are just some of my favorites.
So staff, thank you. Although my Co-Editor position is coming to an end, I look forward to continuing my Weather Vane career alongside many of you.
To any of our readers who have ever had the slightest interest in joining the Weather Vane, I urge you all to give it a shot. I never expected to find such a fun community working for a newspaper, and yet my interest in writing quickly turned into an appreciation for those around me. The Weather Vane hopes to see you next Fall!
