It is a lovely time of the year to go get some cake. Last Saturday, following the Walk for Hope, I entered the kitchen of Harrisonburg’s Cupcake Company.
Small and shabby, the kitchen and the counter are all right in front upon entry. Paint and a couple pictures mark the surrounding walls. A few tables serve as a filler of otherwise empty space.
I approached the counter, an L- shaped display encompassing the store—the one thing in between me and my delicious dessert.
“Would you like to pick a box of six?” the worker asked. I told her I needed a minute to take in the menu.
The options were a bit overwhelming: cakes, pies, brownies, cheesecake bars, pie cups, and, of course, cupcakes. With so many different tastes, what did my own sweet tooth desire?
I decided on the Bacon Maple Pancake cupcake for myself, and my boyfriend picked the Blueberry Cheesecake cupcake. Our cupcakes were boxed up immediately and given to us. At $2.50 each, would the cupcakes be worth the hype?
We took a seat and scrutinized the cupcakes. They looked nice. They smell ednice. Unfortunately, after struggling to peel the cupcake wrapper off of my Bacon Maple Pancake cupcake, I discovered that they taste nice, too. That’s it.
The cupcake was sweet, so overwhelmingly sweet, and mine was piled high with frosting. The base of my cupcake was also smaller than the base of the Blueberry Cheesecake cupcake because of the type of batter. The pancake base was good, and I was left wondering if I should have done that life hack where the base is ripped in half and the cupcake is remade into a sandwich of sorts. At least then the sweetness would have been distributed more evenly.
The Blueberry Cheesecake cupcake did not disappoint. The frosting was not too sweet, and the cupcake had a blueberry filling that was a wonderful surprise. The base of the cupcake also had a layer of what tasted like graham cracker. The consistency was unique and tasty.
I would rate the Bacon Maple Pancake cupcake as a six out of ten, while the Blueberry Cheesecake cupcake was a ten out of ten. Worth it? It’s up for debate.
Cupcake Company is located at 39 Burgess Rd.
