The animated Amazon Prime show “Invincible” just wrapped up its third season, and it just keeps getting better. Season Three expanded on a lot of plot points from seasons one and two, and introduced a whole host of new problems for our main character (Mark Grayson) to deal with.
If you haven’t seen “Invincible” the basic premise is that Mark Grayson’s father is a superhero, one of the most powerful on Earth, and Mark is inheriting his powers slowly as he becomes a young adult. Mark then has to learn how to become a true superhero, and use his abilities for what he believes to be right. However, with an ever-growing cast of characters, both friends and foes, finding what’s right becomes increasingly more complicated and difficult. Especially as aliens called Viltrumites keep attacking Earth, gradually sending stronger and stronger forces to try and take Mark down.
Nolan Grayson (Mark’s father) is a Viltrumite, and it was revealed in season one that he was actually on Earth with a covert mission to colonize Earth for the Viltrum Empire. However, with Nolan’s imprisonment for failing his mission, Mark is left to deal with the backup that the Viltrum Empire sends to make up for his father’s failings. Mark’s story as he deals with these threats is very interesting to see unfold, and I can’t wait for more in season four.
Perhaps Mark’s biggest challenge is a Viltrumite sent to Earth at the end of season three. An outcast of the Viltrumites himself, he and Mark find themselves sharing more commonalities than I’m sure Mark would’ve liked. Barring the emotional complications from this battle, it was easily one of the most thrilling and engaging fights in the entire series. Almost 20 minutes of non-stop action from the two combatants makes for a terrific rollercoaster of a fight, and I wish there was more of it.
The character design overall was very good this season. It almost always is very good anyways, but this season it was especially. This animation studio really knows how to make someone look like a badass, which I say in the most admirable way possible. The Viltrumite that Mark fights near the end of the series is possibly one of the coolest character designs in the show, Mark gets a new outfit as well that looks super cool, and a lot of characters that I liked from the previous seasons got a lot more screen time. Like Titan, the thug turned mafia honcho who has a growing family and a lot of enemies, he’s a very cool-looking character, and I was very glad to see more of him.
There were also a lot more moments that tugged on my heartstrings this season. For the purpose of not getting into spoilers, I can’t talk much about any of them, but this season felt a bit on the slower side because of it, which I wasn’t a huge fan of at first. But with all the emotional moments, the heartbreaking moments, and the moments where you couldn’t help but empathize with the plight of these characters, I definitely switched gears pretty quickly. The writing is very well done, and the gentle and passionate actions of the characters really turned my opinion around on this season.
Overall, “Invincible” season three, and the other seasons for that matter, are a great watch for anyone who loves superheroes, big monsters, aliens, etc. There is a lot of gore in this show, so be warned, but it is more than worth it for the payoff of watching a number of great beatdowns and skirmishes throughout the series. The action is great, the writing is good, and I’d have to give “Invincible” a four out of five stars. “Invincible” is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
