I am never one to shy away from a freshly published book, so when I found “First Time Caller” on my Libby app, and it had a wait of about a month, I added it to my hold list. It was one of 3 books that I was very excited to read, and certainly worth the wait!
The story is a dual point of view, following Lucie Stone, a mechanic and the single mom of twelve year old Maya, who has decided to meddle in her mom’s love life by calling in to the Baltimore Romantic Advice Hotline, a radio show that runs at night.
The other point of view is from Aiden Valentine, the voice on the other side of the hotline who has fallen out of love with love, after listening to too many people call in who have terrible complaints. However, when Maya calls into his show, it makes things interesting again. Maya wants her mom to find love, and called to try to get advice for how to make that happen. When Lucie finds her daughter chatting with a strange man in the middle of the night, she’s bound to have questions, as well as some choice words for Aiden on the other end. As it turns out though, the people listening love Lucie, and they want her to find love just as much as Maya does.
The story goes on from there, with Lucie being brought on to the show for a continuous segment looking for a date for her, and after quite a few bad dates, and many late nights with Aiden in the sound booth, she finds love in her co-host.
This book found its way into my list of favorites, with its humor, fun tropes, and emotional moments. There was also some spice, which isn’t for everyone, but it was well written and wasn’t especially graphic. Granted, it’s a romance, there are bound to be some cliched and predictable moments, but it manages to find the balance between being an easy read and being a good book. So if you enjoy a dual POV romance with enjoyable humor and some spice, I would highly recommend checking out “First Time Caller”.
