The show “You”, which can be found on Netflix, was made based on the book of the same title by Caroline Kepnes. Kepnes wrote the book based on her father’s dark humor towards life and social media. The show stars Penn Badgley, who plays Joe Goldbur, a man who has a particular, yet very intelligent, outlook on life. The entire series is narrated by Joe because his views on things are different compared to a “regular” person’s outlook. Throughout the series, Joe lives life-based on a fantasy world he dreams of living in, which is developed through his love of books and causes him to become super fixated on certain things and people and stop at nothing to get those things and, in a sense, “perfect his life”.
This show is a thriller, full of crazy twists and turns, and overall a great spin on typical voice-narrated shows. Just as a precaution, this show can become very gruesome and may be considered “scary” for others, so if you are easily squeamish or get sick to your stomach just by viewing something not pleasing to the eye, this show may not be for you. But, if you are someone who favors a good thriller or “whodunit” type of television, I definitely would recommend this show to you. Also, if you are a person who prefers to have their head in the books rather than on a TV screen, this show throws in a lot of amazing quotes from other popular books. But, if none of that is convincing to you, the book is still available for you to read as well!
Watching the show, the first thing that grabbed my attention was the way Joe speaks. His voice is very profound and you can tell by his dialogue that he is very intelligent and poised in the way he carries himself. Another thing that was really interesting to me was the way social media was used. After watching this show, it will really make you sit back and think how available your whole existence of life can be to a complete stranger. This show could influence you to make all your social media accounts private, or delete them completely, along with making you aware that you should be careful who or what you place around you, and to consider different ways to be safe and observant of your surroundings.
