There are few things in this country that help me survive homesickness and Popeyes is one of them. Do you know the feeling of craving something only your mom makes, or maybe a dish that can only be found in your country? Sadly many times the only solution is to get some ice cream and pretend everything is fine.
When I first arrived in this beautiful country of yours, or more specifically, to Harrisonburg, and saw the big letters “POPEYES” in the characteristic bright orange I felt relieved. I know, who feels relieved to see a fast food chain? Believe me when I say that I would not have thought of that happening to me either. But just knowing that I could go there any time I wanted something that tasted exactly like back in Peru was reassuring.
A waft of greasy air surrounded the interior of the Harrisonburg location of Popeyes. The wide windows naturally lightened the entire place, and the bright orange gave life to the booths, tables and decorations around. While people chatted, I approached the counter to ask for a 3 piece combo that contained three classic pieces of chicken, one biscuit, cajun fries (yes, you read correctly, CAJUN fries), and a cup of soda of my choice.
Usually the cashier asks if you want any sauces along with your order and gives you the options; this time however, I had to ask for the sauces myself. Honey for the biscuit, and ketchup and honey mustard are my favorites for the fries. I noticed that they have lots of different ones from spicy to sweet (to be honest I don’t know what others, nor have I tried them. Too risky). In Peru there is one sauce besides ketchup and mayo, and it is the only thing that I wished they had here because it is the perfect mix of spicy with salty and softness; but in all fairness, Peru does not have honey mustard nor the biscuit.
The order was ready within five minutes and the price was affordable for the quantity received. The chicken pieces were juicy and well cooked on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The biscuit was soft and perfectly harmonious with the honey on top. For the fries though, I would have liked them crunchier, whoever was on fries duty could have done a better job that day.
Overall the experience was good. After determining the flavor, customer service, and price I decided to give it a 8.5. I might be biased but it is without doubt a great combo for a cold day, or a hot one. Any day really. If you have not tried Popeyes yet, I would definitely recommend you do.
