The movie has a promising start. The main character, Alex, has a boyfriend (he is awful), and a successful corporate career; but everything drastically changes when her mom’s cancer is back (hope this is not a big spoiler). I loved the way the mood changes in the same place, evoking an entirely different emotion.

When reading the mom’s last will and testament, Alex finds out that she will need to fulfill all of the things from the wish list she had done when she was a teenager in order for her to receive her heritage; for example, becoming a teacher, getting a tattoo, learning to drive, making peace with her dad, or learning to play the song “Clair de Lune” on piano.

I personally enjoyed the small pieces of wisdom spread throughout the movie. Like this quote from one of the mom’s videotapes: “Life is beautiful and messy and complicated, and sometimes it does not look the way you think it is supposed to look and that is okay, keep going and always be brave.” It is true that as young adults we sometimes start shifting out priorities and forget about our childhood dreams. Sadly, this sometimes leads us to conform with less than we deserve because of society’s expectations and opportunities in life.

Another one of the things from the list is to find true love. The movie has been talked about a lot because apparently couples broke up after watching it and answering the four questions that will determine if their current partners are the right fit for them:

  1. Is he kind?
  2. Can you tell him everything in your heart?
  3. Does he help you become the best version of yourself?
  4. Can you imagine him as the father of your children?

Alex meets a very cute guy in the metro and “somehow” they end up meeting again at her new job as a teacher (we all know this happened because it is a movie, not very realistic). There is however another love interest, her lawyer. If you ask me, it is very obvious from the beginning who will end up being her “true love.”

Overall the movie was entertaining but I would not say it is worth the hype it is receiving. I will give it a 3.5/5. I think that even though the idea is there, there could have been better chemistry between the characters, and more depth in the scenes of her doing things from the list. As one of my friends said: It would be a good movie to rewatch in the background. It is available on Netflix and it is a good watch to take a break from assignments and spend time with friends or yourself.
