The very first cornhole tournament hit the EMU campus for Friday night fun.
It was the first cornhole tournament of the year put on by EMU Recreation Sports, and it had a large turnout of students. It was a cold night for the cornhole tournament, but it still brought many teams out to come to compete and have fun.
Six teams participated in the tournament, each looking to become the cornhole intramural champions.
Junior Luke Wheeler was just looking to have a good time coming into the cornhole tournament. “My expectation coming into the tournament was that I would have a good time and get to play some cornhole with my friends,” said Wheeler. The thrill of competing also brought Wheeler to the event. “I wanted to play because I enjoy playing intramurals and the chase for the
intramural champions shirt.” Throughout the tournament, there were many competitive games. Even though all the competitiveness, students still seemed to be having fun competing with friends and just enjoying their time together.
For first-years Halie Mast and her partner Karla Hostetter, it was a dominating run all the way to the championship match. They crushed their first-round match to get to the second round. In the second round, it was a closer match, but they still prevailed to move to the championship match. The championship match was a nail-biter. Both teams kept the score close, battling it out at the very end. It went down to the very last bag being thrown when the opposing team ended up knocking a bag off to make them lose the match. Halie and Karla had won the tournament. For Halie, it was a bunch of different feelings becoming a cornhole intramural champion. “Two feelings that come to mind when winning the cornhole tournament are cold and relieved. To be honest, I didn’t really think Karla and I were going to win, but we were there to try and have fun. All the games were intense and close, especially the last one, which made the win even better!” said Mast. Looking back at the tournament, there were some things that Mast really enjoyed. “I enjoyed how close the games were; the score was back and forth. There were even times where someone would go over 21 and have to go back to 15. Getting an intramural shirt was pretty cool too.”
EMU’s Recreation Sports Director Katie Corbit was impressed by the tournament’s attendance. “The tournament had a pretty good turn out and the students that did come out seemed to have a really fun experience!” she said.
After this turnout, students are looking forward to what EMU’s Recreation Sports department puts on next!
