The Diamond Royals have played 11 games thus far in their 2021 baseball season. With an overall record of 5-6, the team looks to continue their conference play and prepare for their doubleheader against Randolph-Macon on Saturday.

Junior Brendon Barrett has transitioned from the bullpen to a starting pitcher this season. In his first start of the season, Barrett threw 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts against Virginia Wesleyan.

“I have been working hard to get in shape to be a starter and I trust the guys behind me 100%,” Barrett said. “I like setting the tone for the game because the entire team feeds off of each other’s energy.”

“Brendon has been good for us and the good thing is that he is still learning his new role,” Coach Adam Posey added. “Some of his best days are ahead of him.”

Additional returning pitchers that will play an important role this season are senior John Judy, senior Jonathan Nagle, junior Gage Riddick, and sophomore Hunter West.

Coming off of a few big ODAC wins, the Diamond Royals look to build momentum as they are in the middle of ODAC play. “Our offense is able to keep us in ball games against high-quality teams and we have a solid defense,” Riddick said.

The Diamond Royals sat with an 11-8 record when their season was cut short last year. This year, the team has created a competitive culture even through the struggles of the pandemic. COVID-19 protocols have affected five games and canceled three non-conference games. The veteran club has remained composed and handled the adversity of a limited number of games this season.

Senior Jaylon Lee said, “With our season getting canceled last year, I am just happy that we are finally back on the field again.”

The group of first-years will be pivotal for the team moving forward, as there are 13 players who will be graduating this spring.

First-year Ethan Spraker has stepped into a big role as starting second baseman. “The upperclassmen have shown me the ropes and helped me compete at the highest level,” Spraker said.

Posey added, “I have been able to throw Ethan Spraker out there as a first-year and he has been able to learn on the fly.”

With a significant number of returners, the veteran team seeks to finish their season strong and earn a spot in the ODAC Conference Tournament.
