Field Hockey

The Royals took a loss against Virginia Wesleyan University, the Marlins, on Sept. 29. The Marlins found the back of the net early on in the game at the twelve minute mark. The Royals kept up the intensity and first-year Rachel Breslin had a close shot on goal. This loss puts the women’s field hockey team at an overall record of 6-3 with 0-1 in conference.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team won against Sweet Briar College (1-9-0) with an 11-0 victory. The Royals were busy this game, with each goal scored by a different player. Sophomore Rachel Sauder scored the first goal at 1:48 with an assist from junior Kylie Paul from five yards off the corner. Sophomore Olivia Dalke ended the game with the eleventh goal at 88:05 with an assist from junior Ariel Barbosa at the penalty mark. The Royals finished the game with 35 shots on goal in the first half and 17 in the second, totaling to 52 shots on goal. With this victory, the women’s soccer team improved their record to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in conference. The Royals will play next at home against Hollins this Saturday, Oct. 6.

Women’s Volleyball

The Royals took a loss to Southern Virginia University (10-4) on Oct. 2 with a 3-0 decision. The score for the individual sets came out with 20-25, 20-25, and 16-25. Five players were down for the count during the game due to a variety of illnesses and injuries. Even with missing players, the Royals put up a fight, with first-year Hannah Johnson scoring six kills and two aces throughout the match. Senior Maria Yoder and first-year Abby Sherman also found the ground with five and four kills respectively. First-year Tarynn Clark found her second double digit dig totals with 16. This loss puts the Royals with an overall record of 3-14 and 0-5 in conference. The women’s volleyball team plays Saturday, Oct. 6 in the Goucher Tri-Match in Baltimore, Md.

Men’s Soccer

The men’s soccer team triumphed over Shenandoah University in a 1-0 victory. Junior Caleb Oakes put the ball in the back of the net in the minute 30, marking the only goal of the game. The defense put in the effort and only allowed five shots on goal. This is the Royals’ fourth shutout of the 2018 season, with keeper senior Emmanuel Kampanga saving four shots. This win moves the Royals to 5-5-1 overall record with 3-1 in conference. The men’s soccer team will play next at Emory & Henry on Saturday, Oct. 6.
