Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team celebrated a 68-66 win against Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, Jan. 16, marking an important increase in ODAC standing. On Saturday, Jan. 19, the team lost to Lynchburg 78-66. However, the game featured several impressive scores from Seniors Sammy Thomas and Tariq Caldwell, among others.

After several days off, the Royals will be back at home playing against Guilford on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 4:30 p.m.

Women’s Basketball

The season looks bright for the women’s basketball team; they won two games this past week. On Wednesday, Jan. 16, the Royals defeated Shenandoah University in a 63-47 win. On Saturday, they played Hollins University. The team progressively improved as the game went on, resulting in a 59-48 win.

Their next game will be on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2:30 p.m., also against Guilford.

Indoor Track and Field

Athletes from the men’s and women’s track and field team traveled to Annville, Pa. for Lebanon Valley College’s Dutchmen Invite. Senior Derrick Chirinos won the men’s 800m. Junior Justin Odom and Senior Toni Doss broke PRs in shotput and throwing events, respectively. Sophomore TyJuan Nelson won in his heat, accompanied by a strong performance from first-year Wade Banks. Senior Laurie Serrell won the 800m and sophomore Ania Summers finished fourth in the 55m.

The team travels to Roanoke College for the Finn Pincus Invitational next weekend.

Men’s Volleyball

The men’s volleyball team dropped their two opening games of the season against Elms College on Saturday, Jan. 19. Both matches resulted in 0-3 defeats. Seniors Travis Abele and R.J. Ocampo and junior Sean Wright led the Royals in an impressive start to the game. Sophomore Wyatt Bollinger and first-year Drew Bennett also contributed several aces throughout the game.

The team anticipates rebounding with two games on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m.
