Track and Field

Eight PRs were broken by five members of EMU’s indoor track and field team over the weekend. The team traveled to Salem, Va. on Jan. 26 to take part in the Finn Pincus Invitational.

Senior Toni Doss earned a PR with a throw of 38’ 8.25”, placing her at third in EMU history.

Seniors Derrick Chirinos and Laurie Serrell each broke two PRs in the invitational’s 1000m and 600m events. Chirinos earned his first of the day with a 2:47 in the 1000m race, good for 14th place, and his second with a 1:31 in the 600m. Serrell broke her PR in the 600m race with a time of 1:49, placing 6th. She surpassed another PR in the 1000m with a time of 3:14 and a 4th place finish.

Junior Abigail Shelly also earned two personal bests at the invitational. Shelly ran a 5:46 mile, shattering her previous PR by more than 20 seconds, and a 2:39 in the 800m dash.

A time of 9:21 earned sophomore Justice Allen a 12th place finish and a new PR in the meet’s 3K. Allen ran the mile earlier in the day, finishing 22nd at 4:45 and nearly warranting another personal record.

Men’s Volleyball

EMU’s volleyball men traveled to Pennsylvania over the weekend for the Arcadia Knight Classic invitational. The team returned to EMU still in search of their first win after losing each of their three matches at the Classic. The team’s record is now 0-5.

The Royals’ first match of the weekend resulted in defeats of 25-22, 25-19, and 29-27 against John Jay. A 10-3 run in the first set put the team within reach at 23- 22, but John Jay prevailed late on back-to-back kills. Another late-game comeback and a 27-26 lead in a win-by-two situation almost earned the Royals a victory in the third set, but John Jay put the match to rest with three straight points.

A loss to Elmira dropped the team’s record to 0-4 despite a five-set contest with 25-22 and 28-26 Royal victories in the second and third sets. Senior Sean Wright and first-year Jacob Durren put up 12 kills and six blocks respectively, but 27 kills from Elmira’s Jose Malave were ultimately too much for EMU to overcome.

Arcadia University, the host for the weekend, handed EMU its third loss of the weekend with matches 25-11, 25-10, and 25-16 wins.

EMU will play #5 Stevenson and #2 Stevens at home on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Women’s Basketball*

EMU women’s basketball suffered a 73-57 defeat Saturday at the hands of Guilford College, the #1 ranked team in the conference. EMU could not hold onto a 28-25 halftime lead as Guilford came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring the Royals 23-8.

Senior Lindsey Krisak led the team in points (16) and steals (14) and hit four of her six three-point attempts. Senior Jess Washington added 13 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.

The team’s season record is now 9-10. Having won seven of their last 10 games, the women will look to regain momentum on the road at Emory & Henry on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Men’s Basketball*

The men’s record similarly dropped to 9-10 after facing Guilford College Saturday night on EMU’s home court. The visitors coasted to an 18-point 70-52 victory.

The Royals’ 38% field goal percentage was not enough to compete with Guilford’s nearly 50%. More than a third of Guilford’s points came off of turnovers, whereas the Royals put up just eight points from 13 Guilford turnovers.

Sophomore Tim Jones had a solid outing, leading the team in points (13) and earning four rebounds, one assist. and one rebound. Sophomore DJ Hill put up eight points and senior Travis Clower scored seven. Guilford had three players score double digits.

The team will face Emory & Henry at home on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 6:00 p.m.

*Note: Both basketball teams competed Wednesday night. Results will be included in next week’s Royals Recap.
