Last season, EMU’s softball team finished strong in the top four of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. With a record of 21-19 overall and 7-11 in the conference, the team looks forward to beginning competition in their 2019 schedule.

EMU will be returning five starters, including All-ODAC pitcher sophomore Kelsi Martin. Martin will step into the prominent role of providing leadership in the circle. Senior Brittany Viands said, “Kelsi has such a calming presence on the field, especially during intense game situations.”

Along with Martin, there are a number of strong juniors and seniors coming back to help lead the Royals this season, including junior Taylor Hensley and seniors Dallas Crawford and Beck Hoskins. Back from injuries, senior Casey Coleman and junior Cassidey Chrisman are ready to help the Royals in the infield. Also returning are sophomores Danielle Brenneman and Alia Miller.

One obstacle the team will have to overcome is the loss of two senior starters, Sydney Reath and Tiffani Shaheen, due to season-ending injuries. Even though they are not going to be on the field with their teammates, they will be looked to as leaders throughout the long season.

With 13 new faces added to the roster, this team is full of potential and has the chance to do big things together.

Sophomore Alia Miller described the dynamic: “Once we figure out how to work as one unit, together, we will become stronger.” As a young team, the Royals will be looking for the first-years to step up and play crucial roles.

During spring break the Royals face eight teams, playing in 10 total games. Shortstop Danielle Brenneman is looking forward to the start of the season in Myrtle Beach, S.C. “One of my favorite parts of the season is the amount of team bonding we have during spring break,” she said.

The young team will continue home to play and compete at a high level in one of the toughest conferences in Division III softball.

Head Coach JD McCurdy stated, “I look forward to watching this young team bond and grow together to take this program to the next level.”

The team travels to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for their season opener on March 2 at Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
